winter break ♥
1. The movie The Power of One was one of the most difficult movies that I’ve ever had to watch. I liked the movie and the actors did a spectacular job portraying their roles, but some scenes were very hard to watch. For example, the scene where Peekay’s chicken was hung up on a rope and killed. I almost started to cry. Another scene was when Geel Piet was beaten to death by Sergeant Bormann. Also, when Sergeant Bormann made Geel Piet eat manure off of his shoe was so disgusting and wrong I can’t believe he would do that to another human being. I was very inspired by the way that Peekay used music to share his story and why he believes that what the Afrikaners were doing was wrong. I am appalled that Peekay, so young, could influence the ways of others the way that he did. I was very shocked that Maria had left her family and disobeyed her father so she could be with Peekay. I thought she was going to stay with her father because she seemed like a daddy’s girl and she didn’t have the strength and courage to leave her father the way she did. Most scenes in this film were harder to watch then the other films we have seen so far in Global Ed this semester, such as Hotel Rwanda and Rabbit Proof Fence. The Power of One was one of the most inspiring movies I’ve seen and if I was given the chance to see it again, I would do it in a second.
2. Over the holiday season some of my family’s traditions are well-known and others, not so much. One of my favorite family traditions is my Aunt Mary’s famous cannolis. This year I was able to help her make them. She already had the dough deep-fried but all we had to do was fill them, dip the ends in Mini Nestle’s Chocolate Chips, and put powdered sugar over the top of them. My aunt makes them every year at Christmas and they’re a hit at my grandma’s house. Another family tradition at my grandma’s house on Christmas is that we play tons of games, such as Left-Right-Center, BUNKO, Catch Phrase and other games that are always a riot with a big group of people. One activity that we all enjoy at my house on Christmas Eve is passing out small pieces of the Eucharist. We each take a piece of the loafer-type bread and walk around to each person and say, “Peace be with you,” or “Merry Christmas.” Then you break a piece off of the other person’s bread, and eat it. We all have a great time taking large amounts of each other’s bread and eating it because the loafers are very delicious. One of my favorite memories from Christmas last year was that my second cousin, Bradley, loves my sister Taylor. So every time he sees her he goes crazy. Bradley is only 3 so he doesn’t know what’s going on. My sister hates when he follows her around and asks everyone, “Where’s Taylor?” It’s so adorable. Even though most of the people I know celebrate Christmas, we all celebrate it in very different ways which makes all of our traditions just as special.
3. This New Year, I went over to my friend Bridget’s house for a party. We played spoons, called some friends, and looked through magazines. When I got home, my sister and her friend were watching the Las Vegas New Year’s Show. I was able to see my favorite singer, Justin Beiber perform live, even though I had just seen him in concert. In 2009, I have a lot of great memories. I made my soccer team that I’m on now, Canton Celtics. I also made the Freshmen Basketball team. I have made a lot of new friends too, just from high school and as well as soccer and basketball. I look forward to hopefully making the JV soccer team at Stevenson. I look forward to next summer to be able to go to my swim club, Fairway Farms. One of my New Year’s resolutions is to try to go outside more and hang out with my friends more. I want to also go to my swim club more because summer 2009 was too cold to go to the swim club most days. I wish I would have gone to the pool more. I also want to babysit more so I can earn more money. I hope that 2010 is just as fun as 2009 was and I’m excited for the new school year in 2010 because then I won’t be a freshman anymore and people always tease the freshmen. I think 2010 will be weird to say out loud to people too because before we used to say ’04 or ’95 and now we say ’10. It will take some getting to used to. I hope that 2010 will be just as good as 2009.

1.I am thankful for my mom because I can talk to her about anything and she truly listens to what I’m saying and what I need help with. She takes care of me when I’m sick, and she cheers me up when I’m down. My mom is also very artistic, she helps me with ideas for school projects, friend’s gifts, and party ideas. My mom is also my one and only shopping partner.
2.I am thankful for my dad because he helps me with my homework anytime I need him to and he helps me understand my questions. My dad is also the sports man, if I have any questions about sports or scores he fills me in on that. My dad is also the problem solver, if I have a problem, he’ll fix it.
3.I am thankful for my sister because even though she annoys me sometimes, she is still there when I need her and is fun to hang around with.
4.I am thankful for my Grandma Kole because she is the funny one on my dad’s side and she knows how to make me smile when I need a good laugh.
5.I am thankful for my Grandma Walla because she helps me work through my problems and make good choices and decisions throughout my childhood.
6.I am thankful for my Auntie Kay because she is always there when I need her, whether it’s a ride home from school or to stay home with me when I’m sick, she’s always there.
7.I am thankful for my Uncle Mark because he makes me smile and always has a joke or funny story to tell every time we see him. He always puts a smile on my face.
8.I am thankful for my Aunt Pam because she is the artistic one in the family and she helps me whenever I need some of her artistic style in whatever I’m doing.
9.I am thankful for my cousin Missy because she is the stylish one in our family and if I ever need any advice on clothes or an outfit she’s always right by my side. My cousin Missy is also like my older sister. She helps me if I have trouble with school or boys, she’s always there.
10. I am thankful for my Aunt Debbie and Uncle Dave because they are the fun and creative ones in the family and they always know how to make me smile and throw an awesome party.

High School: A Month in Review
Old Friends, New Friends
I still see some of my old friends at school, but not all of them. Some of my old friends have different lunches and I don’t have classes with them, which stinks. Hopefully I will have classes with them next semester. I have made a lot of new friends, especially from Global Ed, like Jake Colley, Becca and Allie Koestering, Breanna Gabrielson, and a lot more that I can’t think of right now.
SHS Activities Attended
So far, I have been to the Freshman Dance, the Welcome Back Dance, some Varsity Football Games, and both of the Invisible Children’s events. I am looking forward to Homecoming this weekend.
Funniest, Weirdest, Scariest Moments
On the first day of school, I walked into my second hour, Art Fundamentals, late and as I was walking in, everyone in the class, including my teacher, stared at me like I had something on my face. It was so scary to be looked at by thirty different people.
Hardest, Easiest Class and Assignments
My easiest class would have to be Spanish. I’m not sure why but Spanish seems easy to me. My hardest class would probably have to be either Global Ed or Art Fundamentals. I know that Art Fundamentals should be easy, but it is actually hard. My teacher grades really difficult and it’s hard to get an A.
Top Five Current Events
1. Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize.
2. LPS loses $7.7 million.

Faces in the News
Some of the popular faces in the News are Barack Obama because he just won the Nobel Peace Prize. Another face that has been in the news lately is Hillary Clinton. A couple more faces in the news are the nine Supreme Court Justices, Hamid Karzai, Ardi, and Abdullah Abdullah.
Interesting New Words
Some news words that I have learned are perfunctorily- which means to do something out of routine, akimbo- which means to put your hands on your hips, and limpid- which means something that is clear and calm. Another word would be sylvan which means a wooded or forested area.

First Cultural Event
For my first Cultural Event, I went to the Invisible Children's movie. For my next cultural event, I went to the Invisible Children's event when the actual Roadies came to Stevenson.
Homecoming was so much fun. I had a blast. I never thought that homecoming would be that much fun. We went to homecoming in a limo that my friend got for free! We also ate at her house which was easier because we had 25 people in our group. Then I spent the night at my friend's house. That was fun too!
Some advice for freshman would have to be to not buy an elevator pass and make sure that you get a seat at lunch or have a friend save you a seat because a couple of days I haven't gotten a seat at lunch and it really stinks. Also, study for your tests and midterms! That's always important.
I'm looking forward to going on a Global Ed trip within my next four years of high school. I'm excited for prom, next year's homecoming, and the homecomings to come! I'm also excited for basketball try-outs in 2 weeks and soccer team try-outs in the fall.
Other Noteworthy Achievements or Events
I hope that I will get all A's for this card-marking. I'm trying my best to work hard in classes and do good on my tests. I am playing indoor soccer for my club and hopefully Stevenson. I will be trying out for basketball within the next 2 weeks.

Culture
3rd hour 9-24-09
Paragraph A.
I would define American culture as diverse and a variety of people all together as one. American culture is also a way that the people in our country are alike and a part of something bigger than just a country. It is important that we all are a part of one, united nation because if we’re not, then our country would fall apart. Americans may have different customs and different beliefs, but together we all feel that we will do whatever it takes to be a united nation. All of us, in one way or another, choose how we will share our diverse cultures and find things in common with all of them. For example, all people should remember 9-11 and all of those people that risked their lives to save other people. Also, people should remember the Pearl Harbor Attack and what happened to all of those citizens who died. Everyone should celebrate those two holidays especially because those are two historical events that no one will ever forget. Most people work in their community to help make where they live e better place for not only them, but the people around them. For example, the people of Livonia help to make our city better by having a Livonia Recreation Center, and other activities that people can do together to work as a team. Our community has tons of activities that kids, as well as parents, can do together such as sports, picnics, and other activities that families can do together. Even though people may have other religions, races or ways of living, we are all a part of one, unique, American culture.
Paragraph B.
My culture is many different things. I am Polish, German, Russian, and Czechoslovakian. Both sides of my family celebrate our cultures in different ways. For example, one time each year we go to my grandma’s house, on my dad’s side of the family, and we make Kielbasa with this special hand-cranking machine that my Aunt Marie has. Kielbasa is a type of Polish sausage. My uncle goes to the meat market before and buys at least 5-10 pounds of meat. Then my grandma puts all of the seasonings in it to make either the original one or the Italian sausage. It is a tradition that my dad’s Polish family has had ever since I can remember. On Christmas Eve, my mom’s side of the family comes over to our house and we celebrate Christmas Eve by going to church, either together or separately, and then we go to my house. We eat Pierogis (Polish dumplings), Kielbasa, and other ethnic foods. Then we will have the bread from church and break it to share with each other and say, “Peace be with you.” I am also a Christian, which I think separates me from everyone else because there are a ton of different religions that people can choose to have beliefs in. I believe that if different families didn’t have diverse cultures, then our world would not be the way that it is today.
